SOOP Joins the JPI Oceans European Marinas Network Knowledge Hub
We are excited to have participated in the kickoff meeting of the European Marinas Network Knowledge Hub—a new initiative aiming to establish marinas as strategic hubs for environmental monitoring, marine research, and citizen science.
Launched by JPI Oceans and led by Italy and Greece, the Knowledge Hub seeks to build a Europe-wide network of marinas that serve as data collection centers for ocean observation. By integrating innovative sensor technologies and monitoring stations, marinas will provide real-time environmental data, such as water quality and temperature, helping to drive sustainable marine management.
Why Marinas?
Marinas are more than just docking areas; they are dynamic socio-economic centers for boaters, water sports enthusiasts, maritime businesses, and local communities. Their infrastructure makes them ideal platforms for collecting, sharing, and utilizing environmental data to foster more sustainable ocean governance. With marinas, society get access to ocean data very close to the shore, and the data will be beneficial for the marinas and their customers.
SOOP’s Role in the Knowledge Hub
As a participant in this first meeting, SOOP brings its expertise in digital coastal data collection and utilization. Our platform enables scientists, businesses, and citizen initiatives to collaborate and develop data-driven solutions for challenges in the maritime sector. The European Marinas Network Knowledge Hub represents a unique opportunity to advance this vision on a European scale.
