FAQ
Is there something you always wanted to know about SOOP?
Who and what is SOOP?
We are the Helmholtz Innovation Platform SOOP, which stands for “Shaping an Ocean Of Possibilities”.
The three Helmholtz Centers GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the Helmholtz Center Hereon are working together at eye level with society and industry to co-create sustainable ocean observation structures globally in the growing market of the New Blue Economy with our key partners.
The aim is to create a sea of opportunities and develop an ocean observation market characterized by innovation.
We specifically address the awareness of climate protection through oceanographic and climate-relevant data and the interest in cooperation between science, society, business and politics.
We are ce-creating reliable, cost-effective and user-friendly, standardized measurement systems, services and a data platform that can be used to collect, provide and use ocean data.
Together with our key partners, we are establishing an innovation-based value chain to strengthen ocean observation and contribute to closing the prevailing data gap together with non-scientific stakeholders and the maritime industry.
Why is it important to collect more data about the ocean and close the data gap?
Ocean data is of central importance for economic development, scientific research, sustainable environmental management and awareness of the oceans in our society. It forms the basis for informed decision-making and climate modeling and also enables collaboration between different stakeholders for the benefit of climate protection.
How does SOOP contribute to this?
We enable non-scientific actors to carry out ocean observations. We aim to jointly co-create and standardize ocean platform technologies to reduce the cost of measurement technology and increase accessibility for all committed ocean enthusiasts and blue economy companies. An important basis in the current phase is testing on different non-scientific boats and the use of prototypes to enable the interoperability of sensors. In the long term, this will lead to high-quality and comparable data.
What is SOOP's Strategy for PIONEERING IN Ocean Observing?
Pioneering the Future of Ocean Observation – The SOOP Strategy 2035
The ocean covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface and is vital for climate regulation, biodiversity, and the global economy. Yet, ocean monitoring remains fragmented, underfunded, and technologically inconsistent. SOOP – the Sustainable Ocean Observing Platform – is revolutionizing ocean data collection by fostering a collaborative innovation ecosystem that bridges science, industry, and society.
Vision
“A sustainable use of the ocean through a growing innovative market on ocean observing, where stakeholders provide and use new interoperable technologies and transparent data.”
Mission
“SOOP initiates an innovation ecosystem for sustainable ocean observing that lowers the barriers for the development and increased use of measurement systems and common data flows.”
The innovation platform SOOP:
- Unites awareness and interest from science, society, businesses, and decision-makers for the support of ocean observing on non-science infrastructure.
- Co-creates SOOP platform technology that sets standards to create open, interoperable technology solutions that significantly lower barriers to the development of measurement systems and data flows.
- Enables partner co-development of reliable, affordable, and user-friendly measurement systems adhering to the SOOP standard.
- Supports ocean observation and data dissemination from non-scientific maritime infrastructure.
- Activates innovation potential of the Blue Economy, from technology development through to usage of data.
Innovation at Scale
SOOP enables widespread ocean observation through the co-development of measurement technologies, automated data solutions, and cutting-edge business models. By integrating scientific infrastructure with non-scientific maritime platforms, SOOP fosters cost-effective, scalable monitoring systems essential for climate action, marine resource management, and biodiversity protection.
