Enabling Edutainment at Sea – SOOP receives HX Foundation support

“Science becomes tangible when people can experience it where it’s created.”
– Tobias Steinhoff, SOOP Scientist

With support from the HX Foundation, SOOP is developing an innovative edutainment concept to make marine science accessible in real time for guests aboard research and expedition vessels.

In the near future, interactive displays on ships such as the MS Fridtjof Nansen will visualize live data collected during the voyage—ranging from salinity and CO₂ concentrations to microplastics and environmental DNA (eDNA). This real-time data will be integrated into an onboard edutainment system that transforms scientific processes into engaging, easy-to-understand experiences.

In addition to the visual components, the concept includes guided talks, hands-on workshops, and storytelling formats delivered by researchers. These elements are designed to create a stronger emotional and intellectual connection between the public and the ocean—raising awareness for the complexity and beauty of marine ecosystems.

By combining research, technology, and education, SOOP aims to close the gap between science and society, and to shape a more ocean-literate future.

We thank the HX Foundation for their trust and support in realizing this vision.
