Innovative Technologies for a Sustainable Marine Economy: 1st Place for Team SOOP at #ORCC 2024

The future of the blue economy will be shaped by technological and social innovations and interdisciplinary cooperation. The international team of the Ocean Re-Creation Challenge (ORCC) “Ocean Data from the Plankton Camera”, consisting of Archana, Martin, Jannik and Urszula, shows how this can be achieved. The Ocean Data Challenge was given by the innovation platform SOOP in cooperation with OpenUC2 in the ORCC Hackathon. The winning team achieved a great success for developing business models based on plankton data.

The challenge: Ocean data as the basis for innovative business models

The team was faced with a complex task: they had to develop an innovative business model based on plankton data collected with the camera system (OASIS). The special feature of the camera system, which was jointly developed by Open UC2 and SOOP, is the real-time recording of plankton and particulate organic matter (POM).

The highlight: this technology can also be used by citizen scientists on ships worldwide

Valuable data and insights into marine ecosystems are the aim of this type of data collection, which can then make a significant contribution to the conservation of marine resources.

The solution: a forward-looking business model for the blue economy

The team impressed the jury with a well thought-out business model. Their solution integrates citizen scientists and takes the collection of plankton data as open access data to a new level. The team strategically identified markets for this data. In addition, they developed convincing sales arguments to motivate other stakeholders to become part of this network. A step towards a sustainable marine economy

This success illustrates the immense importance of technological and social innovation for the blue economy. Projects such as the OASIS plankton camera not only open up new business opportunities, but can also contribute to achieving global environmental goals. The future of this solution is bright and we look forward to seeing how the team will continue to develop this technology with the market potential of the New Blue Economy in mind.
