The biggest problem in ocean technology development is the variety of sensor components. Over the past few decades, we’ve learned that much of the time, energy, and resources in ocean observation missions are consumed not by the creation of new technologies, but by integrating those interfaces into infrastructures. Connecting different systems and ensuring smooth data exchange remains a limit in innovation, while keeping costs high.
It shouldn’t be this complicated.
The SOOP platform technology OSBK (Open Source Building Kit), currently in development, aims to change that. By improving the interfaces of ocean observation systems, much like other industries have done successfully, we can unlock faster, more efficient pathways to innovation in the marine space.
Why Now?
As experts in ocean science, with decades of experience in scientific ocean observation, we are uniquely positioned to tackle this challenge. The growing demand for broad ocean observation systems, coupled with advancements in sensor technology and data transmission, makes now a perfect time to develop platform technologies like the OSBK.
How OSBK Works
OSBK is designed as a building kit (toolbox) meant to help pave the way for easy to build, affordable, modular, and adaptable ocean observation systems.
With OSBK, developers can save both time and money by reducing the complexity of system integration and focusing on what really matters: gathering high-quality data.
OSBK enables industry players to build their own measurement systems or to integrate it into existing measurement systems, making them interoperable. This simplifies system management, and makes it easier for companies to expand their data collection capabilities without having to overhaul their infrastructure.
Additionally, through our data node, we enable the collection and unification of ocean data from multiple sources, transforming raw data into actionable information. By leveraging existing infrastructure—like that at the Helmholtz Centers—we can integrate data from various platforms, enhancing the user experience for developers, innovators, and end-users alike.
Our long-term vision is an open interface standard that allows sensors and sensor systems to connect seamlessly, without requiring complex configuration or calibration for each individual component.
Key Benefits of OSBK:
- Automated, cost-effective systems accessible even to non-experts.
- Modular, scalable and easily expandable.
- Open-source solutions that evolve with your needs.
- Application of industry standard communications, making them interoperable.
- Established standards from sensor integration to operation and communication strongly simplifying gathering data of top-tier quality.
Easy data – easy access – easy participation!
