SOOP – Shaping an Ocean Of Possibilities and Maccaferri Futura Set Sail for Ocean Research with Class40 Skipper Luca Rosetti
Bologna/Hamburg, March 2025
We are proud to announce a new collaboration between SOOP – Shaping an Ocean Of Possibilities and Maccaferri Futura, supporting advanced onboard ocean monitoring aboard the Class40 racing vessel skippered by Luca Rosetti.
As part of this partnership, SOOP – Shaping an Ocean Of Possibilities has equipped the boat with its modular Sailing Box – a cutting-edge system for collecting real-time environmental data at sea. The system measures key ocean parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen, using innovative sensors developed by Nesa. These sensors are fully integrated with navigation data via Oceano Vox and connected through systems provided by Navico Group, a global leader in marine instrumentation.
All collected data is shared in real time with the scientific community via the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet Physics), contributing to a better understanding of ocean health and improving climate models.
In addition, a collaboration with the University of Milano-Bicocca enables further onboard testing of tools and protocols for air and water sampling. The goal: to assess the presence of anthropogenic pollutants and identify biochemical markers emitted by the ocean — contributing to a deeper understanding of what researchers call the ocean’s “breath.”
Arinna Liconti, scientific coordinator of the project, underlines:
“This initiative brings together sailing, technology, and science — creating a scalable model of citizen science to protect our oceans through direct observation and real-time data collection. With Maccaferri Futura’s commitment to sustainability and climate resilience, this project demonstrates how sailing platforms can become powerful instruments for environmental monitoring and how passion for the sea can serve science.”
